Tunnel Engineering Services celebrates its 25th anniversary this year
The team at Tunnel Engineering Services (UK) Ltd. would like to thank everyone who has helped make the company’s first quarter century so special.
Set up in March 1992, Tunnel Engineering Services (TES) passed the 25-year benchmark in a strong position. Today, TES is the only designer and manufacturer of tunnelling equipment in the UK and still contributes to large-scale infrastructure projects in the UK and abroad.
Company founder and director Geoff Clarke said: “I’m really pleased that the company I set up 25 years ago is in a strong position today – but Tunnel Engineering’s longevity is far from a personal achievement. There is a fantastic team working at TES, but I also want to thank the company’s industry partners, contractors, sub-contractors and customers who have all played important parts in our story.
“The last 25 years have been great. Now we’re looking at how we can make the next quarter century even better – starting with an overhaul of how we speak to customers and industry partners online. We’ve already rebuilt our website to make it more visible and accessible, now we want to improve our email and social media communications.”

Our story so far
TES was formed in March 1992 by Geoff Clarke. Since then the company has cultivated an enviable reputation for quality in the design and manufacture of tunnelling machines and equipment for the construction industry.
Part of this success is undoubtedly down to the loyalty and professionalism of the staff involved at TES. The company’s first apprentice, Marcus Rajput, joined the company in 2000 and 17 years later, he is still with the company working as Fitting Foreman overseeing two of his own departments.
In 2001, TES became the official UK and European agents for Akkerman Inc., an American manufacturer. This partnership enhances the product range of TES to provide the highest quality tunnelling solutions.
TES has also manufactured a large number of its own mechanised tunnelling machines and tunnel boring machines between 1.2m and 8.0m i.d., these machines have been delivered to infrastructure projects around the world. Closer to home, in Greater Manchester we recently manufactured the largest excavator tunnelling machine ever built in the UK. The EX8000 Machine was used on Network Rail’s Farnworth Tunnel Electrification project.
Other large infrastructure projects that we have contributed towards include United Utilities East Link pipeline, National Grid London Cable Tunnels and Stratford City Utility Installations, completed as part of the country’s preparation for the Olympics.
One of the machines that we are most proud of is the Cancer Research Race for Life Pink mechanised excavator machine, which is available for hire through our website.
Last year, TES took home two top-tier awards from the One Oldham Business Awards, with TES winning a Business of the Year award and Geoff Clarke taking home the Business Person of the Year award.
